Unlocking The Gut Microbiome And Its Massive Significance To Our Health

What Is the Best Probiotic for Your Gut Health?

If you want to learn more about whats going on in your gut, the first step is to turn your poo blue. How long it takes for a muffin dyed with blue food colouring to pass through your system is a measure of your gut health: the median is 28.7 hours longer transit times suggest your gut isnt as healthy as it could be. We are only now beginning to understand the importance of the gut microbiome: could this be the start of a golden age for gut-health science?

The gut microbiome is the most important scientific discovery for human healthcare in recent decades, says James Kinross, a microbiome scientist and surgeon at Imperial College London. We discovered it or rediscovered it in the age of genetic sequencing less than 15 years ago. The only organ which is bigger is the liver. And, for all that the internet may be full of probiotic or wellness companies making big health claims about gut health, We dont really know how it works, he says. At the risk of sounding like the late Donald Rumsfeld, theres what we know, what we think we know, and an awful lot that we dont yet have a clue about.

A very small Italian study using a similar commercial probiotic, Sivomixx, piqued his interest after it suggested acute Covid patients treated with it might be less likely to end up in ICU or to die, and eight times less likely to suffer respiratory failure. Bjarnason is hoping to start a larger study in the next few months.

Gut Health Is Complex

The Gut Health Diet Plan by Christine Bailey

The digestive tract remains a mysterious organ, and research continues to highlight how poorly understood it is. Take IBS for instance, the symptoms can be bad enough to stay home from work, avoid social occasions, and cut whole food groups out of your diet. Yet, there is no evidence of damage to the gut that can explain it.

Fortunately, scientists and doctors have started to look outside the gut for explanations. Interest in the gut-brain axis is growing because the gut has its own nervous system that constantly talks with the brain and can sense external stimuli like food and threats. Thats why anxiety can weigh on the digestive tract too.

In addition to that, the gut microbiome – an ecosystem of bacteria that lives in the large intestine – is now recognised as an important feature in gut health, and also digestive disturbances. Food and antibiotics are important factors that can influence its composition. Gut bacteria also communicate with the brain via the enteric nervous system and substances they produce.

Sometime before the age of 5 or so my son misheard the term taste buds and imagined, instead, that his mouth was alive with taste bugs. This came in handy for him when under fire for rejecting the variety of new foods we put on the table. It wasnt his fault that he didnt like broccoli and spinach, hed explain, it was his pesky taste bugs.

Back then, we considered this mostly exasperating. Now, it turns out, the kid may have been right. Using the improved detection capacity of genetic sequencing techniques, scientists have discovered that 100 trillion microscopic creatures live in and on the body, influencing everything from the intensity of our immune responses and our moods to our dietary preferences and propensity to gain weight.

The most prolifically microbe-rich organ is the large intestine, which in the average American is home to a dynamic ecosystem of 1,200 different bacterial species. These creatures produce a slew of compounds, from toxins that cause inflammation and are associated with heightened heart-disease risk to critical vitamins, the mood-regulating hormone serotonin and compounds that suppress hunger and reduce glucose and insulin levels in the blood.
