There is very little preparation involved when it comes to taking a lipase test. Because it is a standard blood test like a complete blood count , it requires very little preparation. It is best if the patient has been fasting prior to the test, however, and most doctors will order a fasting test. For a lipase test specifically, the doctor will want you to be fasting for 8 to 12 hours prior to the administration of the test. If youve never taken a fasting blood test before, there are a few things to keep in mind.
Its a good rule of thumb to not fast for more than 12 hours, as this may negatively affect the results of the test. If your doctor has ordered a fasting blood test, prepare to go to the phlebotomist or laboratory first thing in the morning, or make an appointment early in the day.
Do not eat any food for 8 to 12 hours before your test. It is a common myth that it is okay to drink black coffee in the morning prior to a blood test, but this is not true. Coffee is a diuretic, and it contains caffeine and soluble plant matter, so it should be avoided for a fasting exam.
Similarly, do not drink alcohol 8 to 12 hours before your test. In fact, your doctor may advise you not to imbibe for up to a full 24 hours before taking a lipase test.
Is Epi A Symptom Of Pancreatic Cancer
EPI can be a sign of pancreatic cancer. There are also other causes, so having EPI doesnt mean you have pancreatic cancer.
Chronic pancreatitis is one of the main causes of EPI. Chronic pancreatitis is associated with a higher risk of cancer, especially pancreatic cancer.
In a large Danish study, 13.6 percent of people with chronic pancreatitis developed cancer, with pancreatic cancer being the most common type. This is compared to 7.9 percent of the control group.
There have been multiple studies looking at the rates of EPI in pancreatic cancer.
A 2015 review included people with pancreatic cancer who were not surgically treated. It reported that 50 to 100 percent of them had EPI.

Jaundice And Related Symptoms
Jaundice is yellowing of the eyes and skin. Most people with pancreatic cancer will have jaundice as one of their first symptoms.
Jaundice is caused by the buildup of bilirubin, a dark yellow-brown substance made in the liver. Normally, the liver releases a liquid called bile that contains bilirubin. Bile goes through the common bile duct into the intestines, where it helps break down fats. It eventually leaves the body in the stool. When the common bile duct becomes blocked, bile cant reach the intestines, and the amount of bilirubin in the body builds up.
Cancers that start in the head of the pancreas are near the common bile duct. These cancers can press on the duct and cause jaundice while they are still fairly small, which can sometimes lead to these tumors being found at an early stage. But cancers that start in the body or tail of the pancreas dont press on the duct until they have spread through the pancreas. By this time, the cancer has often spread beyond the pancreas.
When pancreatic cancer spreads, it often goes to the liver. This can also cause jaundice.
There are other signs of jaundice as well as the yellowing of the eyes and skin:
Pancreatic cancer is not the most common cause of jaundice. Other causes, such as gallstones, hepatitis, and other liver and bile duct diseases, are much more common.

Pancreatic Cancer Metasised To Liver
My husband is 56, he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, on 1st June 2016 . We were told that it was inoperable and incurable but he would be given the option of chemo. He had 5 cycles of Folfirinox however a recent scan revealed that the chemo hadnt worked and the tumours had increased in size. He was offered an alternative chemotherapy Gemcitabine and has had 3 treatments so far. He is extremely thin as he finds it very difficult to eat. He has some food tends to be ice cream or sugary sweet desserts and he has two fortisip protein drinks each day.
We have three children 17, 18 and 23 who each deal with the situation differently. We are very strong and remain positive however the question of how long have we got? Is like a black cloud that just wont go away. We try to do as much as we can but sometimes the pain is too bad and we lose days. The chemo doesnt give him many side effects, his pain is the biggest problem.
In the original consultation meeting, the oncologist gave a prognosis of 3-6 months of the first chemo worked, and it didnt. Were now in the 5th month and although my husband is fighting hard, the time line haunts me.
Id love to hear from anyone going through the same journey.
