Bone Broth For Gut Health

Bone broth isnt just tasty. Its also rich in amino acids, collagen and nutrients, including gelatine and glycine, both of which help to support the gut barrier. According to Christine, Consuming bone broth is an easy way to support your gut health and an effective way to support overall digestion.

Gelatine absorbs water and helps maintain the layer of mucus that supports the gut barrier. Gelatine and glycine have also been shown to help lower inflammation and glutamine is an important nutrient for maintaining a healthy gut lining.

What Is Bone Broth

Bone broth is created by cooking meat or fish in water, typically with vegetables, for an extended period of time. Cooking times may range from as little as 3 hours to as much as 72 hours. Bone broth advocates recommend homemade bone broth, not store-bought. It is thought that the processing of store-bought broths strips the broth of its healing properties. In addition, there are concerns about some of the ingredients found in store-bought broths.

Researchers have begun to identify a connection between gut health and the rising rates of some of the chronic health conditions of our day. Naturally, this research suggests a need to improve the health of the gut, e.g. the balance of the gut bacteria and the integrity of the intestinal lining, in order to reduce unwanted symptoms. As part of this effort, attention has been brought to the notion that bone broth may be quite beneficial to the health of our intestines and therefore our overall health.

Getting The Most From Your Bone Broth Fast

Drink bone broth thats made with quality bones and connective tissue, such as grass-fed beef bones or organic chicken bones. Your broth is only as good as the bones of the animal it came from. For this reason, we recommend only using grass-fed, grass-finished beef bones or organic chicken bones.

Q: Can I eat anything during a bone broth fast?

A: Its normal to get hungry during a fast, but if you get to the point of being uncomfortable, feel free to add a tablespoon of coconut oil, ghee, or grass-fed butter to your broth, and you can snack on raw veggies.

Q: How often can I do a bone broth fast?

A: If you are in good health, once per week is safe. Its actually best to do it consistentlyevery Monday, for example.

Q: Whats the longest period of time I can fast for?

A: There are mixed opinions from health experts on how long a bone broth fast should last. Some say up to four days. However, we recommend going no longer than 24 hours without solid food.

In any case, its still important to check with your doc before doing any type of fast to make sure its 100% safe for you.

Q: So, can I use regular stock or broth instead of bone broth?

A: Nope. A bone broth fast is so beneficial primarily because of the amazing benefits of collagen and gelatinwhich are the result of simmering bones and tissue for approximately 24 hours.

Experts are torn on whether you can gain the skin-firming, joint-strengthening benefits of collagen by ingesting it, but studies have shown an improvement in skins elasticity and fine lines from collagen supplements.

Will Drinking Bone Broth Heal Your Gut

Bone brothwhether it be fowl, fish, or meathas long been a staple of the human diet. Homemade broths have fallen in popularity due to the ease of purchasing store-bought stocks. However, the use of bone broth as a healing agent, particularly in the area of gut health , has been gaining in popularity.

What Are Amino Acids

As we mentioned here, proteins, especially the collagen protein, contains a unique combination of four amino acids.

Not only are amino acids the main component of collagen products, but they are also crucial for the complex, day-to-day operations of your body.

As a matter of fact, there is a study that showed that adding these four amino acids might help slow down the bodys aging process.

Back in ancient, and not so ancient times, humans used all parts of an animal, tip to tail as they call it, in their diet.

Animals bones, joints and skin are rich in amino acids. Since our ancestors used these animal parts in their diet, they ate a lot of amino acids.

Today, modern society doesnt use all parts of the animal. That means you dont get as many amino acids as your body could use.

Furthermore, the 4 main amino acids in collagen protein cannot be made by the body. You must get these amino acids from the food you eat.

Lets dive deeper into each amino acid that makes up the collagen protein:

Glycine

The amino acid glycine is involved in the transmission of chemical signals to the brain, used to treat conditions such as schizophrenia, stroke and cystic fibrosis.

Also, studies show glycine can be your best friend if you have trouble falling and staying asleep.

Proline

Proline is used in tissue repair, collagen formation, arteriosclerosis prevention and blood pressure maintenance.

Make Space & Time For Rest

Fasting is always associated with rest. Your body rests, your mind rests, and your gut rests.

You should not do a bone broth fast if you have a stressful work project or if youre in the middle of a move or any transition. Actually, the weekend is an ideal time for working people to fast.

The point is, you should be prepared with bone broth, but you should also be prepared to slow down and do restful things: watch movies, read, take naps, journal, go for leisurely walks.

Dont do CrossFit or run 5 miles a day or even try to pack in a day of errands during a bone broth fast.

Also, you may notice that you feel bored because youve used eating as a way to pass the time or to stimulate yourself. Have some restful and enjoyable activities within reach so you can distract yourself until that feeling passes.

    Gelatin For Your Digestive System

Most of the gut healing protein in bone broth is due to gelatin. Gelatin is a type of protein that is similar to collagen.

For all intents and purposes, gelatin and collagen have the same health benefits. Why? Because gelatin and collagen share an identical amino acid profile.

Meaning, they both have glycine , proline, glucosamine and glutamine in identical amounts.

So whats the difference? Gelatin is a cooked form of collagen. And since bone broth for gut health is simmered or cooked for a long time, the collagen turns into gelatin in the finished bone broth.

Gelatin does two things for your gut health.

I Got A Different Kind Of Energy Boost

I was kind of nervous when I started this experiment and I fully expected to fail . So I was pleasantly surprised when I did, in fact, feel pretty great while sipping on my 3 p.m. cup of bone broth. It delivered a dose of what Id call “calm energy.” Unlike coffee, which can make me feel amped up, anxious, and nervous if I drink too much, bone broth simultaneously increased my ability to focus and made me feel comforted and calm.

This may have happened for a few reasons: For one, drinking too much coffee can actually deplete levels of B vitamins, which help your body make neurotransmitters that regulate mood and stress so drinking less coffee over time might result in reduced stress due to higher nutrient stores. But, more realistically, the immediate calming sensation I experienced was likely due to the fact that I was sipping on something that tasted like chicken soup, which always seems to soothe my frayed nerves. The energy boost I got, I assume, had more to do with the calories and protein in the bone broth meaning I was actually giving my brain nutrients it needed to function as opposed to tricking it into a state of alertness with caffeine.

This isnt to say I felt perfect. The first few afternoons of nixing coffee I was still dealing with some drowsiness and crankiness. But the switch was less painful than expected.
