Leaky Gut in Dogs

When allergens and pathogens are prevented from being absorbed into the systemic circulation by healthy mucosal barrier mechanisms, there can be no systemic immunological response. Disrupted bowel barrier function, however, will lead to inappropriate increases in antigen and toxin loads and will disrupt detoxification mechanisms, thereby creating increased immune system and liver enzyme mobilization. Over time, this can lead to chronic pathology.

Impaired barrier function can also lead to diseases of the immune system. For instance, when bowel permeability increases, classic hypersensitivity to foods and components of normal gut flora can result. Bacterial endotoxins, cell wall polymers and dietary gluten may cause non-specific activation of pro-inflammatory pathways. Chronic low grade endotoxemia has been shown to contribute to the development of autoimmune disorders. Increased intestinal permeability may be either involved in the course of each disease, or a secondary effect of the hyperpermeability leading to immune activation and hepatic dysfunction, and creating a vicious cycle of disease promotion.

Leaky Gut And Its Effects On The Entire System

Let me explain to you what happens when the gut is under attack.

The gut lining, or epithelium, is made of a single layer of cells. Its the only thing that separates food moving through the digestive tract from the bloodstream. It is responsible for digesting the food and processing it so that nutrients can be absorbed into the bloodstream and used by the body.

In a normal, healthy gut, the individual cells are very closely tied together through tight junctions, so that nothing can pass between the cells. Little finger-like structures at the luminal side of the cells contain enzymes and host the microbes that help with digestion. In a healthy gut, anything that is ingested is broken down, absorbed into the cells, and then transported safely into the bloodstream.

In an inflamed gut, these little tight junctions open up. This allows particles that have not been properly digested and are too big for the body to use, to pass between cells.

The body recognizes these particles as dangerous foreign bodies and calls on the immune system to clean up the mess.

Causes Of Leaky Gut Syndrome Or Condition

Leaky gut syndromes occur due to severe damage to the intestine. At some point, the reason behind the leaky gut condition is acute or short-term damage. Some of the acute cases that cause leaky gut syndrome are trauma, intestinal infections, toxins, and medicine overdosage. All of these reasons cause damage to the intestinal barrier and result in leaky gut syndrome.

Lower The Stress Levels

As with prevention, a low-stress level is crucial for the healing process and the digestion of the nutrients from the food.

Walk your dog every day 1-2 times. After feeding the right diet, exercising your dog is the most important thing you can do to help your dog stay healthy. I already shared how important this is for the activation of the lymphatic system and its important functions.

The Main Issue With Food Is What Most Pet Owners Wrongly Call Pet Food

Dysbiosis: Does Your Dog Have Leaky Gut?

The root cause of the many health issues we see in dogs and cats today, in my opinion, is the diet. Living on kibble which is cooked, processed, and often containing wheat, soy, and corn is not what the digestive system of a dog was ever designed for. Another issue is that most of the nutrients added are synthetic.

Feed Your Dog A Species

Species-specific means feeding your dog the foods their ancestors evolved with to ensure they are getting all of the nutrients their species requires. If you still want to buy dog food, make sure to get a grain-free brand that only lists meat and veggies as the ingredients.

Include:

  • Animal bones as a treat

* Another option to give your dog extra calcium and minerals is to make an eggshell meal and add it to their food. See instructions below:

Eggshell Powder

  • Rinse eggshells thoroughly, then soak in cold water for 30 minutes.
  • Bake eggshells in the oven at 200ºF for 10 minutes to dry them.
  • Remove and grind into a fine powder in a coffee grinder.
  • Use ½ teaspoon per pound of food you give your pup.
  • Avoid:

    • Processed grains and any food with corn, soy, or wheat.
    • Processed oils like canola, safflower, cottonseed, and soy.
    • Foods with dyes and other chemicals you dont recognize.

    Reduce Stress In Your Dog

Stress is one of the leading causes of leaky gut in our pups. Stress releases cortisol which can further throw their gut and microbiome off balance adding more inflammation to their immune system.

Keeping a close eye on what makes our furry friends anxious and removing it from their routine can help minimize their stress.

A great way to lessen the stress in our friends’ lives includes going for walks daily. They need to burn off the excess energy that they feel. Taking them for a walk helps them burn off their energy and get their daily exercise. It also helps with their mental well-being.

Noise is another factor. Keeping loud noises to a minimum can help them feel at ease and relieve some anxiety. If your pup tends to get bored, it helps to give them toys or dog puzzles to keep their mind stimulated and ease the boredom.

Since things like anxiety can produce stress, supplements like melatonin can help your pup during these times. Whether you are away for too long or there are bright and loud fireworks in the sky , melatonin can help ease their nerves and calm them overall, reducing their stress.

Early Experience With Leaky Gut Syndrome

Ive been recommending raw dog food since 1994 and have seen unimaginable health improvements in dogs switched from kibble to a real whole food, species-specific diet.

As my practice evolved and years went by, I began to see more and more patients whod already transitioned to raw food. In the last few years Ive also started to see more and more dogs suffering from allergies, auto-immune diseases and, of course, cancer.

There were many times when I sat at my veterinary clinic long after my clients had gone home, scratching my head about why we were seeing an influx of these diseases when many dogs were on a beautiful raw food diet.

Why did some dogs do so well for so long, then all of a sudden start to react with an inflammatory response?

Why were some of them okay on a novel protein diet but then had sudden reac-tions to all proteins, including the ones that had tested negative on allergy tests six months prior?

Then there were the ones who were allergic to trees, grass, mites and other environmental factors.

One day I was geeking out on the physiology of a cat patient that had interstitial cystitis .

I realized that if the mucosal lining of the bladder can leak, then so can the mucosal lining of the gut.

This could explain why all these dogs were over-reacting to so many foods and environmental allergens.

How To Treat Leaky Gut in Dogs (Dog Stomach & Gut Problem Solution)

Because leaky gut triggers an immune response in the entire body, it can be hard to detect. But common symptoms include:

    • Autoimmune disease
    • Liver, kidney, pancreas and gall bladder disorders
    • Behavior issues

The signs of leaky gut in dogs are varied because the chronic inflammation it causes can affect any organs. Its truly an issue for the entire body.

It also shows that leaky gut is much more common than scientists first believed and potentially more disastrous for your dog.

Now, since a large percentage of dogs have one or more of these health issues, lets look at the causes of leaky gut. If one or more of these apply to your dog, then its a good bet there may be leaky gut present

Can Stress Cause Leaky Gut Syndrome

I believe stress is a very important factor to consider when it comes to leaky gut in dogs. Long periods of time alone combined with not enough exercise can be damaging to your dogs health. A dog suffering from boredom and anxiety is a stressed dog.

A recent study found that stress seems to play a role in the development of leaky gut and that brain health can affect your dogs gastrointestinal system. Yes, the brain is linked to the gut. A healthy brain promotes a healthy gut. Therefore keeping your doge calm and balanced is important for overall health.

Leaky Gut In Dogs: A Growing Epidemic

In alternative medicine, a condition called leaky gut syndrome is said to affect the lining of the intestines, resulting in symptoms such as persistent muscle or joint pain, poor concentration, indigestion, gas, mood swings, nervousness, skin rashes, recurrent bladder or yeast infections, constipation, or anxiety. 1. Injuries to the digestive tracts lining can result in leaky gut syndrome, which allows pathogens and toxins to leak into the bloodstream. This.

Treating Leaky Gut Syndrome. So while we know that leaky gut syndrome can cause gastrointestinal distress, doctors still arent completely sure about whether a leaky gut is a symptom of larger conditions or a contributing factor to these related conditions. Either way, if you are experiencing any of the above symptoms, its important that.

Some of the most widely reported symptoms of leaky gut, also clinically known as intestinal permeability, include: Food sensitivities, such as lactose intolerance or gluten allergies. Fatigue and low energy levels. Bloating and feeling full all the time. Skin problems, such as allergies, eczema, and psoriasis.

How To Know If Your Dog Has Leaky Gut

One of the most common signs of leaky gut in dogs is diarrhea. This can be mild or severe, depending on the extent of the damage to the gut lining. Some dogs may also experience vomiting and weight loss.

Other symptoms include an inflamed colon, inflammation in other parts of the body, skin rashes and itchiness, allergies, food sensitivities, autoimmune diseases and chronic ear infections.

You can also check for symptoms of dog leaky gut syndrome by listening to their bowel movements. If they’re gassy or have loose stools with undigested food particles floating around in it, then it’s likely that their digestive tract is not working properly and there may be a problem with their intestinal lining.

Also Called Hyperpermeable Bowel Leaky Gut Syndrome Is A Condition That Has A Strong Relationship To The Immune System And The Development Of Chronic Disease

Bella was losing weight uncontrollably after treatment for gastritis and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. She had been treated with prednisone, vitamin E and folate for vomiting and diarrhea, but her weight continued to drop. Among other things, she was suspected to have leaky gut syndrome or hyperpermeable bowel, a disorder that affects digestive function, nutrient absorption and has a strong relationship with the immune system.

When we or our dogs eat, we want the digestive system to absorb all the good stuff while keeping out the potentially toxic, antigenic and pathogenic materials. How does the digestive system do this? The answer lies in the four levels of protection provided by the barrier system of the GI mucosal wall:

    1. Mucus layer covering the microvilli2. Tight junctions between epithelial cells3. GALT-sIgA in the mucus of the glycocalyx4. Probiotic species

The gastrointestinal tract has the greatest amount of surface area exposed to the environment of all three barrier systems in the body. In humans, the skin has less than ten square meters of surface area, whereas the lungs have about 140 square meters. The human gastrointestinal tract, however, has 320 square meters of surface area exposed to the environment. These surface area relationships are comparable in dogs.

How Can We Prevent Leaky Gut In Dogs

Leaky Gut In Dogs … A Growing Epidemic

Your dog or puppy may not have a leaky gut at the moment, but if you are feeding kibble, I suggest you take action before you get there because preventing leaky gut is much easier than healing a dogs gut that is already suffering from leaky gut syndrome.

As I mentioned above feeding your dog a species-appropriate diet is the first step you need to take to start the process of prevention.

Why is that so important? I have touched on this earlier but is so important that its worth mentioning again.

You can also manage a leaky gut when you eat foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids like fish, seaweed, nuts, and seeds. Omega-3 assists in reducing inflammation, which is often the reason for the leaky gut symptoms. A 2016 case study reported how these essential fatty acids change the composition of the gut flora. The best way to treat leaky gut syndrome is to follow the four Rs: remove, replace, repair and rebalance. Remove foods and factors that can. Leaky gut syndrome could be responsible for eczema and psoriasis, autoimmune diseases including multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis, acne, irritable bowel syndrome, and Crohns disease to name a very few. Symptoms of leaky gut include diverse complaints including acne, cramps, gas, bloating, allergies, joint pain, brain fog, memory. Allergic responses caused by a leaky gut dont necessarily mean youll break out in a rash all over your body, but it can lead to various other symptoms. Some potential symptoms linked to leaky gut can include: Bloating Food sensitivities Thyroid conditions Fatigue Joint pain Headaches Skin issues, like rosacea and acne Digestive problems.

Although researchers concluded more research is needed, the study indicated that intestinal permeability was normal for 87 percent of the participants after a year on a gluten-free diet. Treatment Of Leaky Gut In Dogs

The primary treatment methods of leaky gut in dogs consists of reducing trauma by removing and reducing the use of medications, poor quality foods and topical treatments that are used frequently on the dog. Next, the dog needs to be treated with pre- and probiotics to assist with the rebuilding of digestive enzymes. The goal is to restore the dog’s body to its original state and reducing the damaging effects that have developed over the years.

For the most part, at-home remedies are enough to treat leaky gut syndrome in pets before it causes any severe problems. If it has developed further and has produced other conditions or diseases, a trip to the vet should be considered to make sure the dog is in the best health possible.
