The Science Behind Acupressure And How It Can Help With Nausea

Acupressure is an alternative medical approach which originates from traditional Chinese medicine. It works by unlocking energy blocks in the meridians, which are the main channels of energy flow throughout the body.

In the case of nausea, scientific research has shown that acupressure can help with nausea caused by different factors. A prominent example of its effectiveness is the relief of nausea and vomiting in cancer patients who are undergoing chemotherapy.

Acupressure also helps with post-operative nausea and vomiting caused by general anesthesia. One recent study examined its effectiveness on 108 patients who had undergone surgery under anesthesia and concluded that it had a positive effect in the relief of nausea and vomiting, making it a good alternative to conventional medications.

Acupressure has also been found to have a positive effect on nausea and vomiting in early pregnancy. You should note, though, that practicing acupressure during pregnancy can lead to premature contractions. This study, however, examined the effects of the PC-6 acupoint, which does not have that effect.

Pressure Points For Nausea

That feeling we call nausea wanting to vomit or being sick to your stomach is a common symptom that has a wide range of causes.

Regardless of why you feel nauseated, know that acupressure is one way to help relieve discomfort.

Acupressure is a traditional treatment method based on acupuncture. Its slightly different from acupuncture in that rather than using needles, pressure is applied to certain points of your body. Pressing on these points may help relax muscles and improve blood circulation.

There are several pressure points, also called acupoints, for nausea. You can reach some of these yourself. Other pressure points are harder to locate. For those, youll want to see a trained acupressure therapist.

When trying acupressure at home, there are a few things to keep in mind:

Pressure Points Massage to Relieve Stomach Pain

Acupressure points are located all around the body along what traditional Chinese medicine refers to as meridians, or energy pathways.

Each meridian corresponds to an organ inside the body, and each acupressure point is named after its location along the meridian.

Stimulating the following acupressure points through massage therapy may help relieve trapped gas and reduce uncomfortable bloating.

Many of these acupressure points are also believed to influence the stomach, intestines, and other abdominal organs to promote digestive health.

Selection Of Meridians And Acupoints

A total of 30 different acupoints were used in 19 RCTS, mainly involving the Stomach Meridian of Foot-Yangming , the Large Intestine Meridian of Hand-Yangming , And Ren Meridian . The top 5 acupoints were Zusanli , Zhongwan , Tianshu , Hegu , and Neiguan . AP lesions in the abdomen, abdominal pain and abdominal distension belong to gastrointestinal dysfunction. Thus, the main meridians selected for acupuncture were ST, LI, and RN. ST36 and ST25 are important acupoints in Stomach Meridian, which mainly treat gastrointestinal diseases. RN12 belongs to Ren Meridian, located in the abdomen, and is good at treating digestive system diseases, such as abdominal pain, abdominal distention, vomiting and constipation. LI4 is the yuan-primary point of the Large Intestine Meridian, and is usually used in combination with ST36 to increase efficacy. PC6 is one of the commonly used acupoints on the pericardium meridian of the Hand-Jueyin. It is used in conjunction with ST36 and RN12 to treat stomachache, vomiting and diarrhea. Therefore, the final selection of meridians and acupoints was based on disease differentiation and treatment. Acupuncture treatment of AP with abdominal pain abdominal distension was an objective combination of modern science and acupuncture and moxibustion theory.

Do Acupressure Points For Gas And Bloating Work

The research on using acupressure for digestive conditions is sparse, with most of the research focusing on acupuncture instead.

However, there is some clinical research that suggests acupressure may have a positive impact on painful digestive symptoms such as gas and bloating.

In one study , researchers investigated the effects of acupressure on 70 hemodialysis patients with constipation. During the study period, patients underwent acupressure 3 times per week for a period of 4 weeks.

The researchers found that stimulation of the common abdominal acupressure points resulted in increased gas release and improved bowel function.

In a similar study from 2015, researchers analyzed the benefits of acupressure for 78 adult psychiatric patients with constipation.

The study participants self-administered acupressure for a period of 10 days and were assessed for the severity of their symptoms. According to the results, participants in the acupressure intervention group experienced a reduction in constipation symptoms, such as gas and bloating.

Although the research indicates that acupressure can have positive effects on gastrointestinal symptoms, more research is still needed to determine the benefits.

Rachel Borlack, MD, Clinical assistant professor, Department of Pediatrics, Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences

BUFFALO, N.Y. A type of acupressure focused on pressure points in the ear could be a promising treatment for functional abdominal pain disorder , a challenging group of disorders that cause chronic abdominal pain in 13.5% of children and adolescents.

Thats the finding from a pilot study published last month in the Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition. First author is Rachel E. Borlack, clinical assistant professor of pediatrics in the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo and a physician with UBMD Pediatrics.

Borlack conducted the study through the Columbia University Irving Medical Center in her previous appointment as a gastroenterology fellow at Columbia Universitys College of Physicians and Surgeons.

FAPD is a group of disorders caused by dysfunction of the brain gut axis, including neurotransmitters, hormonal signaling and the microbiome, which leads to chronic abdominal pain, said Borlack. There is no laboratory test for FAPD, so it is diagnosed clinically.

Borlack explained that since no single treatment for FAPD is uniformly effective, patients with this diagnosis may be prescribed a range of pharmacologic agents or non-pharmacologic treatments, ranging from antidepressants and probiotics to dietary adjustments and cognitive behavioral therapy.

However, there is a lack of systematic reviews and meta-analyses that provide high-quality evidence of the efficacy and safety of acupuncture in this context.

Aim: To assess the efficacy and safety of acupuncture for relieving abdominal pain and distension in AP.

Methods: We searched the PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane Library, CNKI, Wanfang, VIP, and China Biomedical Literature databases. Randomized controlled trials of acupuncture plus routine treatment vs. RT alone or RT plus sham/placebo acupuncture were included. Acupressure Points For Stomach Pain Relief

Can acupressure help with stomach aches and the like?

Acupressure is a healing technique that focuses on stabilizing the internal energies of the body that flow through the acupuncture meridians.

Since the free and abundant flow of these energies promotes all manner of healing throughout the body, it is safe to say that acupressure can be used to treat many health issues including stomach aches, indigestion, and heartburn.

Stomach aches and similar conditions may be caused by many things. It could be caused by what you ate for lunch. It could be caused by some kind of long term food allergy. Or it could be caused by a buildup of stress in the body that manifests as heartburn and other pains.

When you talk about a condition as vague as just pain in the stomach or digestive system, there can be many causes to your discomfort.

Thus, its hard to say just how effective acupressure will be at treating your condition.

Acupressure and energy healing techniques tend to be more effective at healing long term emotional contributors to diseases and aches and pains, such as a buildup of stress, rather than a short term cause of heartburn like eating something thats too spicy for your body to handle.

With that in mind, you may find more or less relief with acupressure depending on the exact cause of your pain.

Thus, I recommend that you try it yourself and see if the acupressure points below provide relief for your pain and discomfort.
