If the diarrhea becomes bloody, the condition worsens and the dehydration can become an emergency.

Other factors such as fever require increase fluid intake and can lead to dehydration along with other metabolic issues such as kidney disease, etc.

Blood in a dogs stool indicates a loos and significant inflammatory response requiring a veterinarians attention but it can be cause by a multitude of factors, from ulceration to parasites. Dehydration is a serious condition that can lead to death. It is an emergency and requires immediate veterinary care.

How Do You Fix Pancreatitis In Dogs

Early detection and prompt medical treatment are essential for the effective management of pancreatitis. When a patient has mild, edematous pancreatitis, supportive care is used to rest the pancreas and let the body heal itself.

Vomiting dogs should be fasted until the vomiting stops. If necessary, patients can go a few days without eating. When recovering, dogs who are not vomiting may be fed a low-fat, highly digestible diet.

In order to keep the bodys fluid and electrolyte balance in the normal range, analgesics will be administered to reduce the severe pain.

Anti-inflammatory drugs or medications to stop vomiting or diarrhea are frequently needed in addition. If a concurrent infection is thought to be present, antibiotics will be given. Most canines with pancreatitis stay in hospitals for two days.

Homemade Dog Food Recipes For Canine Pancreatitis

Before I introduce some canine pancreatitis homemade dog food recipes to you, I want you to be aware of some important information. You should not overfeed your dog, even on healthy homemade food! Feeding him too much food could worsen his pancreatitis and the damage done to his digestive system.

Every individual will have different needs and your vet may well advise you work alongside a canine nutritionist if you plan to home cook. Long-term, diets must be tailored to the individual, to prevent deficiencies and to ensure all nutritional needs are being met. Nutrients like iodine, calcium, zinc and phosphorous may need to be supplemented, depending on your dogs age and breed.

The vet may also recommend adding some digestive enzymes to your dogs diet, including pancreatin, l-glutamine, and Bertes Digestion Blend.

In some cases, you will need to readjust your dogs feeding schedule. Instead of a couple of larger meals, he will need to eat a few smaller meals throughout the day. The following offers some recipes you can feed your dog to help him during a bout of pancreatitis. Try one recipe at a time, and see how your dog responds to the new foods being introduced. If his symptoms seem to increase, talk with your vet before continuing.

Analgesia For Dogs With Pancreatitis

Dogs with pancreatitis have local and visceral pain. Pain scoring systems are routinely used to assess the severity of pain and determine analgesic plans however, analgesic agents have not been evaluated in dogs with acute pancreatitis.1

At the authors institution, a multifaceted, individualized approach to analgesia is based on the patients level of pain as determined by the use of behavioral and physiologic pain scoring systems.2 The initial choice of analgesic agent is an opioid . Then, depending on the severity of pain, an NMDA antagonist and/or a local anesthetic agent may be added adjunctively as intravenous constant-rate infusions.

Ketamine is the first choice when animals continue to be subjectively unsettled or look uncomfortable after opioid administration. Signs of continued pain may include vocalization/crying, failure to respond or interact with people, and guarding, vocalizing, or pulling away when the abdomen is palpated. Ketamine plays a role in reduction of central sensitization and may help reduce nociception from intra-abdominal organs and visceral peritoneum.1

Diet Plan For Canine Pancreatitis

Once your dog has been diagnosed with canine pancreatitis, you must be prepared to give him a low-fat diet. If his condition is severe, you will need to make sure his diet consists of no more than 10% fat. Say hello to lean, protein-rich foods like skinless chicken breast as well as neutral carbs like cooked rice.

The goal is to feed your dog a healthy diet that will supply him with plenty of energy but is easy on the digestive system. Plan on adding an increased amount of complex carbohydrates, such as rice, oatmeal, and barley. Meats like chicken, turkey, and lean beef are also good additions.

Adding healthy vegetables is also beneficial. Sweet potatoes and pumpkins are both good choices. Fat-free yogurt should also be a consideration, though keep in mind that many dogs are lactose intolerant so this could cause a stomach upset.

Your dogs diet should be high in protein, moderate in healthy carbs, and low in fat. Beef kidney is another highly nutritious food that fits easily into low fat diets. Beef liver is also OK, but does have a slightly higher fat content. However, for most meals, youll want to stick to extremely lean meats with not as much fat.

One of the benefits of home made recipes for a pancreatitis diet is that they may be less likely to trigger food allergies, as they will contain fewer ingredients. Keep in mind though, a dog can be allergic to any ingredient, including chicken, beef and grains.

Causes Of Dog Pancreatitis

Many cases of pancreatitis in dogs are caused when a dog consumes a meal high in fat. Often this is from enjoying too many human snacks shared by well-meaning pawrents, but it is also commonly a result of your dog getting into the garbage for a good old scavenge.

That said, most cases of pancreatitis have no apparent cause.

While certain breeds are more prone to getting pancreatitis, other causes can be related to medications like antibiotics known to cause inflammation of the pancreas.

How To Prevent Pancreatitis In Dogs

Pancreatitis is common in overweight dogs with a high fat diet, as well as in dogs that consume a high amount of fat in one sitting. Hence, it is important to avoid high fat foods to prevent overstimulating the pancreas. Doing so can also help dogs lose weight, which can be beneficial for the prevention of pancreatitis over time.

Thankfully My Dog Was Feeling Better

Fancys doing better, Dr. Hammer told me and explained that shed treated her with IV fluids and pain medications. She wanted to keep her on the fluids for another 24 hours to ensure her pancreas rested, but she said to stop by tomorrow to see if she can keep her food down. She suggested bringing steamed chicken and rice nothing else since low-fat, high-carbohydrate food is good for the pancreas.

The next day, a groggy Fancy stared at me through the bars in her cage as I mixed the steamed chicken, rice, and nothing else that I bought at the Chinese restaurant.

Too much rice will constipate her, Dr. Hammer said, so I shoveled some rice back into its container, leaving three-quarters chicken and one-quarter rice in Fancys bowl. When I opened the cage door to feed her, she gobbled up the food.

Good. If she makes it through the rest of the day and night without vomiting, you can pick her up tomorrow, she said.

A Canine Researchers Case Study: Her Own Dog

Caroline Coile, Ph.D is the Nutrition and Health columnist for AKC Family Dog and a two-time AKC Canine Health Foundation Award winner. Pancreatitis is a subject Coile knows well, not only as a professional canine researcher and writer, but because her dog, a Saluki named Beanie, went through the difficult and stressful experience. Here she shares her story:

Beanie, unlike most Salukis, loves to eat. But one day, after eating his very favorite treata flaky biscuithe vomited it up. He was standing with his back kind of hunched. I gently pressed on his abdomen, and he yelped. Out came the thermometer, which told me his temperature was 103 degrees. While I was calling the veterinarian, he vomited again, then lay down in a corner. We were in the car within minutes.

The veterinarian palpated his abdomen, which was definitely tender took his temperature, which was still high and drew blood. Beanie received pain medication, antibiotics, and intravenous fluids to combat fluid loss and came home with strict instructions not to eat that day. Eating anythingor even smelling foodcould have caused his pancreas to secrete enzymes and slow its healing. He could lick ice cubes, and then drink a bit of water.

After a month, Beanie was able to gradually transition back to his old diet, minus the high-fat treats. Eventually, he even got his breakfast biscuitsbut no more butter. He never had another bout of pancreatitis.
